The Michiana Potters
Art, Community, and Collaboration in the Midwest
Meredith A.E. McGriff
August 2020, Indiana University Press
A new pottery tradition has been developing along the border of northern Indiana and southern Michigan. Despite the fact that this area is not yet an established destination for pottery collectors, Michiana potters are committed to pursuing their craft in this region thanks to the presence of a community of like-minded artists. The Michiana Potters, an ethnographic exploration of the lives and art of these potters, examines the communal traditions and aesthetics that have developed in this region. In addition to demonstrating a methodology that can be applied to studies of other emergent regional traditions, McGriff concludes that these styles and methods form a communal bond that inextricably links the processes of creating and sharing pottery in Michiana.
A note from Meredith:
I made these books available online at CaughtUpInClay.com during the pandemic in lieu of the books I would have brought with me to talks and book signings. Currently I am only able to take PayPal through the site without incurring too many additional fees. If you’d like to arrange another method of payment (such as cash, check, or Venmo), please email me at meredith@caughtupinclay.com.
If you would like your book to be signed, please add a note to your PayPal payment (or send me an email at meredith@caughtupinclay.com) – let me know who to make it out to, and if there’s any particular message you’d like added.
I am offering shipping via USPS for free, and I will ship your order soon as possible. If you need the book right away, you may want to consider other online retailers. But unlike purchases from other sites, proceeds from sales here on my website will go to support future research on contemporary potters and pottery!
